Compare Trolling Motors - this link takes you to the 'compare' table
The 12 volt batteries used to power the motors are so designed that, when in use, their charge is almost used up. The motors use - 12 volt, 24 volt and 36 volt – according to the size of it's horsepower.
The actual motor itself is inside a waterproof container at the bottom of the submerged end of the shaft. This prevents overheating.

If the motor is hand controlled, the tiller is used both for steering and for speed control either by the design of the mechanism built into the tiller itself or by a control knob on the top. This type of trolling motor is usually attached to the boat with a clamp.
Foot control motors are also available. The foot pedal is able to control the steering mechanism as well, either electronically or with a push-pull cable. The mounting bracket is bolted horizontally to the deck.
In recent years, trolling motors have been fitted with wireless remote, either within the foot pedal or in the key switch.
The speed at which the motor operates depends largely on two issues. The first is the speed at which the fisherman wishes to travel to reach the fishing site and the second is the type of fish to be caught. For instance salmon are caught at higher speeds than lake trout. Fishermen become adept at controlling the speed to correspond with their plan and purpose for that day.
Kayaks and canoes use trolling motors while fishing at low speeds, especially when going after salmon. Muskie, walleye, black and striped bass are all fish which have been caught successfully in freshwater lakes and reservoirs with the aid of a trolling motor.
The motors are quiet and efficient, allowing the angler to take the fish by surprise. Shaft length is varied to meet different water depth conditions. Some trolling motors come with a weed cutter, a boon when a lot of reeds and underwater growth make it difficult to reach some areas.
