The first float tube was shaped like a doughnut, with an underwater seat in the 'hole'.  The fisherman would wear stocking foot chest waders and flippers so that he/she could manoever to the exact fishing spot by gently waggling the flippers.

Today, they are either round, V-shaped or U-shaped and are much more sophisticated in design - some of them look almost like armchairs.  A fisherman can customize his to suit himself, even to the point of having an electronic fish finder.

It has been mentioned that one problem which occurs with the round belly boat tube is that the waders have filled up with air to the point where the fisherman has turned upside down in his tube.  Be aware - wear a PFD.

In the United States, the Sonoma County Belly Boat Bass Club hold competitions for bass fishing from float tubes.  It is a sport with a growing community.

Fishing for trout is another use to which the float tube is put.

It is considered best not to use a float tube in moving water even if the flow is fairly slow.  Similarly choppy water is best avoided if possible, especially from a belly boat as visibility will quickly become impaired.
